Overview

904L is a highly alloyed, low carbon content, unstable austenitic stainless steel grade. Copper has been added to the alloy of 904L stainless steel tubing. As a result, it is very resistant to strong reducing acids such as sulphuric acid. The lower carbon content makes it easier to produce AISI 904L welded tubes to ASTM A312 specifications. Despite the lower carbon content, these pipes can be used for high temperature applications. The addition of a significant amount of nickel to the ASME SA 312 TP904L alloy allows these tubes to perform well even in high temperature environments. As a non-magnetic alloy, stainless steel 904L pipes also exhibit good resistance to stress-related corrosion cracking. The presence of molybdenum in the alloy reduces the incidence of crevice corrosion. ASTM A312 TP904L is primarily used for general corrosion applications, except for use in moderate to high temperature applications.

Mechanical tests such as transverse or longitudinal tensile tests and flattening tests are performed on seamless 904L tubes to determine compliance with tensile properties. In accordance with ASTM A312, each 904L tube must be supplied under heat treatment conditions with appropriate heat treatment temperatures and rationale regarding cooling or testing.
